Living Art Underfoot: Marea and Alma
The culmination of years of dialogue and experimentation between Armadillo and Catalonian artist Carla Cascales Alimbau, Marea and Alma are the signature expressions of the Gaia Collection - two rugs that transcend traditional craftsmanship to become living artworks underfoot.
Drawing from Canvas to Floor
Cascales Alimbau's artistic vision provides the conceptual foundation for both pieces. Marea finds its genesis in Skin, her sculptural paintings of organic resin on linen that explore humanity's evolving relationship with nature. Alma, meanwhile, draws inspiration from Manantial, where Cascales employs gravity as a silent collaborator. Pure pigments flow organically across linen through alchemy rather than conventional mixing methods.
Innovation Through Ancient Craft
To translate these painterly visions into rug form, Armadillo's co-founders Jodie Fried and Sally Pottharst worked alongside master artisans in India to pioneer new techniques - taking the artistry of woven landscapes into uncharted territory.
Poetry in Materiality
These pieces represent more than decorative objects - they make space for contemplation within the contemporary home. They serve as constant meditations on our relationship with natural forces, invitations to embrace life's changes, and celebrations of the profound connection between art and nature.
